During the Pre-Monsoon months, the coastal city of Mumbai remains extremely hot and humid throughout. And, no significant weather activity is generally seen in the month of March, and April. The scenario remains the same even in the months of January and February. However, in the second half of May, it starts receiving thunderstorm activities.
The maximum temperatures start shooting in the month of March as we see much hotter conditions as compared to the month of April. In fact, March is the transition period from Winter to Pre-Monsoon. Normally, the second half of March, sees temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees.
Also, more than half of an equation, the city has clocked 40 degrees in the last ten years so far. On March 17, 2011, the city recorded 41 degrees Celsius as its maximum temperature.
And, this time, the season has started seeing the heat right from the fag end of the last week of February when the day temperatures were above 35 degrees and even touched 38.4 degrees on February 27, 2020.
Now, again in the month of March, three days in quick succession has touched the mark of 37 degrees and above amounting to heatwave conditions on March 15, 16 and 17.
Temperature fluctuation depends mainly on the wind pattern. Sea breeze plays quite some role in the heating process. Heatwave normally comes when sea breeze over the city either sets or sets in late. During the last 24 hours, the maximums have dropped to 34.4 degrees Celsius. While the minimums are generally in the mid-20s.
Looking at the forecast, we find the early outset of the breezes. Therefore, the day temperatures will remain confined to 33 degrees or so.
Subsequent to these two to three days, temperatures are once again expected to rise. This will be on account of an anticyclonic circulation that is likely to come up over the Arabian Sea off the Konkan and Gujarat coast. And, this feature is going to persist for the subsequent week or we can say for the next three to four days.
Though the trend of rising maximum temperature will be there, for the next one week it is not going to touch the mark of 40 degrees. The land breeze will stay for a longer duration leading the maximums to drop.
