Delhi To Skip Cold Wave Conditions In November: Mercury Stays Marginally Below Normal
Delhi had slipped to single-digit minimum temperatures for the last four days. Base station Safdarjung recorded temperatures under 10°C between 15th and 18th Nov 2025. The lowest during this period was 8.7°C on 17th Nov, about 3.6°C below normal. The minimum has risen to 10.2°C this morning but is still below normal by 2°C. No sharp drop in temperature is likely over the next few days.
As per the pentad normal, Delhi starts with an average of 15°C and drops to near 10°C towards the end of November. Cold wave conditions are announced when the minimum temperature drops to 10°C or less and the departure from normal is 4.5°C or more. A higher departure of 6.5°C or more invites severe cold wave conditions in the plains. Cold wave conditions are also announced when the minimum temperature sinks to 4°C or less. In the last week of November, the minimum temperature needs to drop to 6°C or less for cold wave conditions, which is unlikely. Cold wave conditions are not very common in November. There were no such conditions between 2021 and 2024. In Nov 2020, Delhi observed four days of cold wave conditions, and the lowest temperature dropped to 6.3°C on 23rd Nov 2020.
There is no active weather system likely over the mountains, which otherwise is the main source for escalating cold. Temperatures will drop as part of seasonal progression, without any additional trigger of rain and snow over the hilly region. Temperatures may rise above 10°C for a couple of days during the remaining days of the month. The Bay of Bengal is expected to become an active basin and may witness stormy conditions during the next week. Under the changing wind pattern, the bitter cold over Delhi may also ease, taking the mercury to double digits and possibly just short of the low teens around mid-week next.
