Performance of Southwest Monsoon 2016 in India from June 1 to September 13

Monsoon rains have not shown any significant increase in the week gone by. As a result, the countrywide cumulative rainfall deficiency, which was at 3% on September 6, now stands at 5%.

From June 1 till September 13, country recorded 759.9 mm of rain against the average rainfall of 802 mm of rain.

According to Skymet Weather, good Monsoon rains have only been confined to East and Northeast India. In wake of this, the region has witnessed decrease  in rainfall deficiency from 18% to 13% at present.

However, Northwest India that has been witnessing surplus rains till last week has now also slipped below the normal rainfall. Similarly, in absence of any significant weather system, Central India has also seen significant drop in the rain surplus but has somehow managed to keep its above normal rainfall status intact.

Out of 36 sub-divisions, 3 pockets recorded excess rainfall, 25 pockets had normal rains and only 8 were deficient. In the week gone by, the major contribution came from the parts of East India.

Not only this, the Monsoon has also started showing some of the withdrawal symptoms from West India.

Monsoon Forecast

In the coming week, we expect that Monsoon rains will now make a route to Peninsular India and along the West Coast and few parts of Central India.

All thanks to the development of a low pressure area in west-central Bay of Bengal, which is now prevailing over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Weathermen expect some good showers over North Interior Karnataka, South Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, and Coastal Karnataka.  Mumbai could also see the return of heavy showers over the city.

Scattered rains are also expected over parts of Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Northeast India.

The Southwest Monsoon will also start withdrawing from the parts of the country, beginning from West Rajasthan.
