Rain and thundershowers are likely over the eastern states of the country for the next 4-5 days. Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal will have scattered weather activity, more focused on interiors and coastal parts of Odisha. Border areas of Jharkhand with Odisha and lower parts of Gangetic West Bengal will also have isolated thunderstorm activity during this period. It may even spill over to some freak stations in Chhattisgarh, as well.

It is quite common to have such weather activity over these parts during the second half of February and month of March. The seasonal anticyclone over Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh gets pushed far to the east, over Odisha and the Bay of Bengal. This situation becomes more common under the influence of passing Western disturbances. The surface temperatures, as such, rise over the interiors of Odisha and adjoining parts. Many interior stations of Odisha, like Phulbani, Angul, Titlagarh, Bhawanipatna, Bolangir, and Sambalpur, have recorded temperatures in excess of 35°C. Warm and moist winds from the Bay of Bengal interact with the drier winds blowing across parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Instability in the atmosphere increases, leading to thunderstorm activity in the afternoon and evening hours.

There is a cyclonic circulation in the lower levels over the interiors of Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand. A trough also is extending from Odisha and Jharkhand to Gangetic West Bengal. Some of the stations, like Balasore, Baripada, Midnapur, and Diamond Harbour, have received rain and thunderstorms in the past 24 hours. The intensity and spread of activity are likely to increase over the region in the next 3-4 days. The activity will be more focused on Odisha and lower parts of Gangetic West Bengal. The stations at risk will include Chandbali, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Baripada, Balasore, Paradip, Angul, Phulbani, Gopalpur, Diamond Harbour, Canning, Contai, Midnapur, Bishnupur, Burdwan and capital city Kolkata.

The weather activity will be more pronounced between 19th and 22nd Feb 2025. It will ease out to become isolated between 23rd and 25th Feb. Broad clearance is expected over the region from 26thFeb onwards.
