The state of Tamil Nadu lies in the rain shadow area due to which the state does not witness enough rains during the Southwest Monsoon season. In fact, it is the Northeast Monsoon season when Tamil Nadu sees heavy rains. Moreover, flooding rains also occur at times over Tamil Nadu during that time.

During Southwest Monsoon season, rainfall activity picks up pace over Tamil Nadu in case of a break, weak or a limited Monsoon period. Then, easterly systems develop along the Coast resulting in rains over the state of Tamil Nadu.

Such a situation has been prevalent over Tamil Nadu with the state recording fairly widespread rains in the last 24 hours. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Valparai saw 19 mm of rainfall, Cuddalore 18.6 mm, Adiramapatnam 15 mm, Chennai saw 10 mm, Puducherry 12.6 mm, Tiruchirapalli 8.2 mm, and Kodaikanal 6.1 mm.

Currently, a cyclonic circulation is over northern parts of Tamil Nadu and its adjoining areas. Moreover, a system in the form of a circulation is also over Coastal Odisha region which is becoming less marked. Both these systems aren’t far away from one another.

Thus, scattered rains and thundershowers are expected to occur over the state of Tamil Nadu for another 24 hours. In fact, northern half of Coastal Tamil Nadu will see rains during this time.

Chennai is also expected to see some rainfall activity during the same time frame. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly below the normal levels with maximums settling in the lower 30s while minimums will range in the lower 20s, however, humidity will persist.
