The present Western Disturbance which is intense in nature, is affecting the Western Himalayas and its induced Cyclonic Circulation is over North Rajasthan and adjoining Punjab and Haryana. When these two weather systems move in tandem eastwards, they tend to give heavy rains. The states of Bihar and West Bengal in the wake of these systems would be receiving rains by the night of February 7. The moisture availability in the form of strong south-westerlies from the Arabian Sea is seen up to 9 km above sea level, which is comparatively good.
The moisture feed from the Arabian Seat is acting as a catalyst thus bringing in more rain and snow activity over the hills. Similar weather conditions are expected over the Indo Gangetic Plains as well.
At present, Bihar is rain deficit by 66% and West Bengal by a humongous figure of 99%. The last spell in Bihar was in between January 22 and 23 and in West Bengal it was around January 24 and 25. There is a possibility that good rains over these two states would bring down the deficiency levels.
The systems have already started giving rains and snow over the hills and it will start affecting the northern districts of Bihar and parts of West Bengal. Districts of Bihar like Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Purnia, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Kishanganj would receive moderate to heavy rains. The intensity is set to go up on February 8. The capital city of Bihar, Patna will also see some rains on February 7, which will increase on February 8, become heavy.
Meanwhile, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Cooch Behar in West Bengal would receive heavy to very heavy rains. Light to moderate rains would be a sight over Malda, Murshidabad, Berhampore, Howrah, Kolkata and Midnapore in West Bengal.
By February 9, the rain intensity would start receding and by the evening of the same, the weather would start clearing up. The maximums which will go down during the rains will once again go up. At the time of the rainy spell, the weather over these two states would be comfortable.
