Rain in the offing for parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

August 9, 2015 3:25 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Since the arrival of Monsoon in June, East Uttar Pradesh has been rain deficient. As of August 8, the rain deficiency has not improved at all and the region is rain deficient by 35 per cent. On the contrary, West Uttar Pradesh received good amounts of rain in June. The month ended with a surplus of 4 per cent.

But now, during the first week of August, subdued rainfall activity has been observed in West Uttar Pradesh. Though on and off rainfall was recorded in most areas, widespread heavy rain eluded the region. As of now, West Uttar Pradesh stands 25 per cent rain deficient.

Now, the axis of Monsoon trough is passing through Uttar Pradesh, which is why scattered light rain has been observed in the region since the last 2 days. Parts of West Uttar Pradesh have observed moderate rain. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Aligarh received 28 mm of rain, Muzaffarnagar (10 mm), and Jhansi (10 mm).

Now, for the next 24 to 48 hours, scattered light to moderate rain will continue over the western parts of Uttar Pradesh. East UP will also receive good amounts of rain particularly over the foothills. These rains will be attributed to the oscillation of the axis of Monsoon trough which is expected to remain over UP. After a period of 48 hours, rain may increase over the districts adjacent to the foothills.

Bihar is another wheat and paddy growing region which has not received sufficient rain. By the end of June, the state was 28 per cent rain deficient and no improvement was seen in the month of July as well. By the end of July, the rain deficiency increased to 31 per cent and as of now, the state is still 33 per cent rain deficient.

We do not foresee any major weather activity in Bihar in the coming days. However, the northern and western districts of the state including West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Supaul and Kishanganj may receive light rain over the next 2 to 3 days. Though, these rains will not be able to ease out the rain deficiency in the region.
