Northeast India

The entire region of Northeast India has been recording rain and thundershower activities for last many days. In fact, during the last 24 hours, a gradual increase in the ongoing rainfall activities has been witnessed as fairly widespread rain and thundershower occurred in the entire northeastern states of the country.

For instance, Dhubri in Assam recorded heavy rain of 17.1 mm. Mazbat and North Lakhimpur each in Assam also observed fairly widespread rain of 10.8 mm. Similarly in Sikkim, Gyalsingh recorded 13 mm of rain. In Meghalaya, Shillong recorded 9.1 mm of rain and Cherrapunji observed 6.3 mm of rain during the last 24 hours. Also, Kohima in Nagaland witnessed 4.4 mm of rainfall.

Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim also observed scattered snowfall activities.

These weather activities can be attributed to a Cyclonic Circulation which is persisting over Bihar. This system will be soon moving towards the northeast region in the wake of strong mid-level westerly winds.

In the presence of these multiple weather systems, we expect the intensity of rain and thundershowers to increase today onward across Northeast India. The intensity of rain will be more over Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Snowfall activities will also increase in Arunachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours. Isolated pockets to get heavy snowfall are a forecast as per the weather models at Skymet Weather.

With these rains, the day temperatures are expected to fall further.

Although from the afternoon hours of February 27, rainfall activities will reduce in West Assam and in many parts of Meghalaya, there may be intense weather activities in East Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur. These intense weather activities will continue until the late-night hours of February 27.

By February 28, the weather of entire Northeast India will clear up leading the maximums to rise gradually once again. Thus, we can say that the ongoing spell of rain will be the last episode of rain for the month of February.
