Short Spell Of Heat Wave Likely In Delhi- Mercury May Breach 42 Degrees
Apr 24, 2025, 1:07 PM | Skymet Weather TeamDelhi has skipped the extreme heat so far in the second half of April. Base station Safdarjung recorded under 40°C yesterday and for the second consecutive day. Still, these temperatures are about 2°C above the normal. The city is likely to see a spike tomorrow and the day after, wherein the mercury may breach 42°C for the first time this season. If so, gradual decline is expected thereafter on a daily basis. That pattern may as well extend to the first week of May 2025.
The capital city has observed three days of heat wave so far in the month of April. This was in the early days of the month when the normal temperatures range between 34°C and 35°C and the actuals exceeded the 40°C mark on 07th, 08th, and 09th April. The base observatory at Safdarjung has recorded a high of 41°C or more on three occasions. The highest temperature so far this month has scaled to 41.3°C on 21st April, yet falling short of heat wave criteria. Incidentally, this had been the hottest day of the last three years in April. The highest maximum temperature was 40.6°C and 40.5°C in April 2023 & 2024, respectively. Notwithstanding, the mercury has breached the 42°C mark frequently in the last 15 years. Earlier, the highest temperature of 43.7°C was recorded in April 2010.
A western disturbance has now arrived over the northern mountains. An induced cyclonic circulation is marked over central Pakistan and the border areas of Rajasthan. This feature will move eastward across Northeast Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Northwest Madhya Pradesh over the next three days. The resultant change in the wind pattern will favour warmer winds from Rajasthan, sweeping across Delhi/NCR.
The temperature is expected to rise over the Delhi region for the next 3-4 days. Unlike the last two days, the day temperature is likely to exceed 40°C today. Further rise is expected over the subsequent two days. The mercury may cross 42°C on 26th April and amount to heat wave conditions, albeit a short spell. The excess heat and proximity of the bubble of circulation may trigger rainy patches over and around the Delhi area on Saturday. A brief and light sprinkle can be expected over Delhi and its suburbs. Broad clearance will follow the next day and continue till the last day of the month.
