The second Intense Spell of Rain and Snow over the Hills in March

March 9, 2024 11:34 AM |

The hills of North India are in for another round of wet weather as the second intense spell of rain and snowfall approaches the Western Himalayas between March 10 and 14. This comes after February saw two significant spells, with the first lasting until February 5th and the second hitting between February 18th and 20th.

The news comes as a welcome change after an unusually dry December and January. The intensity of Western disturbances, which typically bring snowfall to the region, was very low during these months, leaving most of the hilly states parched.

This second spell will be driven by two successive Western disturbances. The first arrives on the night of March 10th, bringing isolated light to moderate rainfall and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh.

The intensity is expected to pick up from March 11th to 14th, with light to moderate rain and snowfall possible in many places across these regions. Uttarakhand can also expect isolated light to moderate rain and snowfall during this period.

The plains of North West India won't escape entirely unscathed. Light scattered rain is forecast between March 13th and 14th, with possibilities of rain in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh. Delhiites can expect mostly cloudy skies with a chance of very light drizzle.

So, for those in the hills, be prepared for another round of wintery weather. While the plains may see some rain, the brunt of the precipitation will be felt in the mountains.
