Light to moderate Monsoon like rains have been lashing Kerala and Coastal Karnataka for several days now. However, intensity of rain and thundershowers have increased manifold during the last 24 hours particularly over Kannur, Kozhikode, and Mangalore.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Kannur recorded 105.8 mm of rain, Alappuzha 61.9 mm, Kozhikode 50.3 mm, and Mangalore 56.6 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, weather conditions remain favourable for the weather activity to continue for next few days with increasing intensity. All the stations mentioned above have been recording rains for the last 7 consecutive days.

The rise in the weather activity can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep Island and adjoining areas has been persisting in middle levels. It is likely to become more marked and travel in lower levels, leading to further intensification of rain and thundershowers.

This year, Skymet Weather has predicted above normal Monsoon rains to the tune of 109% of long period average (LPA) of 887 mm of rain for the four-month period from June to September.

The rainfall figures are indicating towards a promising start to the Monsoon 2016.
