Western Disturbance To Flog Northern Hilly States, Plains To Follow Later

May 19, 2022 1:45 PM |

A western disturbance has arrived just on the outskirts of Jammu & Kashmir and is manifested as cyclonic circulation in the medium levels of atmosphere.  This feature will gradually percolate to the lower levels and also induce a secondary cyclonic circulation over border areas of North Rajasthan and Punjab. Both these systems will consolidate their position over their respective locations. Interaction between these systems will retard their movement and therefore become as slow as nearly static for sometime.

Hilly states of North India will simultaneously come under the influence of western disturbance, resulting rain and thundershowers. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightening and hailstorm at few places and squally winds are likely on 20th and 21st May. During this period, the induced circulation over Punjab and Rajasthan will consolidate to become organized and energetic. Under the combined influence of western disturbance and induced circulation, sphere of  weather activity will expand and cover both plains and hills together, between 22nd and 24thMay.

Hills are likely to have scattered moderate rain and thunderstorm with lightening strike and hailstorm at few places.  For the plains, weather activity will commence along the foothills of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh from 22nd onwards. Subsequently, it will travel to cover north Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh on 23rd& 24thMay. National capital Delhi will also be vulnerable to thunderstorm/ dust storm followed by fleeting showers between 22nd and 24thMay.  Also, there is a possibility of mild dust storm with squally winds on 20th and 21stMay as well.

Remnant of the system can still give isolated weather activity with thunderstorm and gusty winds over Delhi, Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh on 25thMay.  An east-west trough is likely to extend from North Rajasthan to Bihar and Sub Himalayan West Bengal, running across Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh between 20th and 25thMay. This feature will enhance the pre-monsoon activity all along the Indo Gangetic plains  during this period.
