If you have pets, then save them from the atrocious winter weather this season. While you take utmost care to protect yourself from the harsh winter, put in a little extra to do the same for your pets too. Tackling winter worries of your precious ones is pretty simple.

Intent for Indoors

If your pet’s house is in your backyard; then bring them indoors. Find a warm place inside your house and keep your pet indoors throughout the winter. Limit the time they spend outdoors. Dogs like the Siberian Husky and cats like the Maine Coon are more acclimated to the cold but don't go overboard. Rule of thumb is: if it is too cold for you, it is cold for your pets too.

Winter Wardrobe

The smart and stylish winter wear is not just for us. Pets can have it too. Boots, coats and leashes are some of the elements that can easily become winter essentials for your pawed one. Cover them up and save them from the inflicting cold wind.

Safe shelter

If it is absolutely necessary to keep your pet outside, ensure that you provide a warm and dry shelter which is big enough that allows them to comfortably sit and lie down. Make sure that the shelter is facing away from the wind and is properly covered so that harsh wind does not enter the pet house.

Do not overfeed

Just because it is winter, your pets need extra calories! Absolutely not! Do not overfeed your pets, especially cats. A little extra food is fine but overfeeding. Remember that whenever you are feeding them, avoid giving them frozen food as it is difficult to chew and digest.

Keep them warm with water

Proper hydration is imperative for your pets in winter. Make sure that you give a lot of water to your pets during this season. Avoid using a metal bowl as the dog’s tongue can stick to the metal and freeze. Ensure that the water is fresh and unfrozen. During bathing, using warm water could be useful.

Provide proper care to your horse

If you are a horse owner, ensure that you give your pet proper shelter as well as warmth. As temperatures fall, horses tend to burn more calories to keep themselves warm. Try to increase the hay rations of your horse to provide him an extra dosage of calories.

Far away from fireplace

Discourage your pet from getting closer to the fireplace. When both, you and your pet, are having a great time by the fireplace or a heater, make sure that he/she sits at a distance from the heat and that no part of the body comes in contact with the flames.

Secure the Birds

Birds are susceptible to carbon monoxide. So if your loved ones are birds, then install a carbon monoxide detector in your homes. Cover the bird cage with a heavier cloth to keep the bird warm in the cold.

No warmth can replace the warmth of your love and care. A big hug or your sweet cuddle will last longer for your pet. Besides this, regular check-ups during winter can also ensure a healthier pet.
