Winter Chill in North India: Delhi Records Season’s Lowest Temperature at 10.4°C
The winter chill has begun to tighten its grip over North India, with minimum temperatures dropping to single digits across parts of Haryana, Punjab, and north Rajasthan. The sharp fall marks the early arrival of winter conditions across the plains.
Cities like Hisar (Haryana), Ludhiana (Punjab), and Alwar and Sikar (Rajasthan) have all recorded minimum temperatures below 10°C.
On November 10, Delhi recorded its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 10.4°C, nearly 4°C below normal, while the maximum temperature settled at 28.1°C, about 1.4°C below normal. This combination made the day pleasantly cool and comfortable, typical of early winter in the capital.
The sudden dip in temperatures can be attributed to clear skies and a steady flow of dry, cold northwesterly winds blowing from snow-clad regions of the Western Himalayas. These winds have been continuously pushing cooler air toward the northern plains, enhancing the winter feel.
Currently, no significant Western Disturbance is expected to approach the Western Himalayas. As a result, the northwesterly wind pattern will persist, maintaining the cool trend. Normally, when a Western Disturbance nears the hills, the wind direction shifts to southeasterly, leading to a temporary rise in night temperatures due to increased moisture and cloud cover.
In the cming days, daytime temperatures may dip slightly, while nighttime readings are likely to remain stable. The combination of clear skies and bright sunshine will keep days cool and comfortable, but mornings and nights will stay chilly, with a distinct nip in the air signaling that winter has arrived in North India.
