Parched lands rejoice! The South Peninsula, grappling with a significant rain deficit, is finally set to receive some much-needed relief. Between March 1 and April 30, the region witnessed a staggering shortfall of 68% in rainfall. Apart from North Interior Karnataka, all meteorological divisions experienced either rain deficiency or large rain deficiency. The situation was particularly grim in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (97% deficit) and Rayalaseema (95% deficit).
However, a change in fortunes is on the cards. Rain activities are poised to commence over most of South India starting May 5th or 6th. A cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the Central parts of the country, with a trough extending from this system southward across Telangana, Rayalaseema, and ending in South Tamil Nadu. Additionally, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal will further enhance rain-producing conditions.
The initial beneficiaries of this weather pattern will be Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, and Kerala. These regions can expect a gradual increase in rain intensity and spread, with moderate to heavy showers forecasted from May 7th. This welcome downpour is likely to continue until May 10th or 11th. While Lakshadweep can anticipate light to moderate rain and thunderstorms between May 7th and 11th, significant weather activity is not expected over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, though isolated rain showers remain a possibility.
This rain spell is not just about quenching the thirst of the parched land; it will also significantly improve the rain statistics of the South Peninsula. More importantly, the increased soil moisture content will prove immensely beneficial for upcoming crops, setting the stage for a potentially bountiful harvest.
