Today, 20th March 2025, marks the ‘Spring Equinox,’ and the moment occurs very precisely at 2.31 p.m. The spring equinox, also called the Vernal Equinox, is a celestial event occurring around this time every year. The equinox, per se, will occur today and again on Sep 22, 2025, at 19:19 UTC.

The event will see the transition from winter to spring as the sun crosses the celestial equator.  It marks the exact moment when the center of the Sun crosses the plane of our planet’s equator. The event also signifies that the sun will be directly overhead at noon. Mind you, the lengths of the day and night are not precisely equal at all locations simultaneously. The date for that split-second moment depends on latitude and may occur a few days earlier or later than the equinox itself.

In March, Northern Hemisphere observers witness longer, warmer days, heralded by their vernal or spring equinox. However, the Southern Hemisphere observers note the shorter days—and longer and cooler nights signaled by their ‘Autumnal Equinox.’ Come September, the reverse will be true.
