The tropical storm over the Bay of Bengal weakened into a deep depression after crossing the coastline near Kalingapatnam. The system moved northwest and is now placed over the interiors of Odisha and South Chhattisgarh. It will weaken further, and the depression is likely to move to North Madhya Pradesh and Central Uttar Pradesh in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely today over Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Scattered moderate to heavy showers are likely over parts of Vidarbha, Telangana and West Bengal as well.

There is a Western Disturbance marked as an upper-air trough over Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining parts. This trough will move eastward and get aligned with the depression tomorrow. The juxtaposition of the two systems will give extremely heavy rainfall tomorrow over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh. This intense weather activity will continue on 27th September, Sunday, as well, albeit with a slight reprieve. Weather conditions will improve on 28th September, but a broad clearance will come up only on 30th September and later.

The spell of extremely heavy rains will cause localized flooding and inundation. It will affect communication and connectivity, impacting rail, road and air operations. Felling of trees, disruption of transmission lines and lightning strikes will derail normal life. Special caution needs to be observed for the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand for the next 48 hours.

The places at risk in Uttar Pradesh will include the capital city Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Raebareli, Sultanpur, Amethi, Barabanki, Banda, Sitapur, Gonda, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Chitrakoot and Mahoba. Moderate to heavy rainfall will occur over the rest of the locations in the state, albeit with reduced intensity.

The entire state of Uttarakhand will be vulnerable to very heavy rainfall, triggering landslides, rockfall, overflowing of water bodies, flash floods and severe lightning strikes. Exercise utmost caution during this period.
