Typhoon Kalmaegi Strikes Vietnam: Weakens To Tropical Storm
Severe Typhoon Kalmaegi, which ravaged the Philippines, struck the coastline of central Vietnam last night. Kalmaegi made landfall yesterday, bringing heavy rains and strong winds that uprooted trees, damaged roofs, shattered windows, and caused widespread power outages. The typhoon has left at least five people dead and many injured. Just before landfall, winds picked up to about 185 kmph and, in gusts, touched 220 kmph. Localized flooding hampered rescue operations. Terrain interaction rapidly deteriorated the vortex of the typhoon. It is expected to weaken into a depression in another 6–8 hours.
The weakened storm will track westward across Thailand and Myanmar. The remnants of the cyclone will enter the East-Central Bay of Bengal around the intervening night of the 8th and 9th of November 2025. It is likely to merge with the pre-existing cyclonic circulation over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal.
Accentuation of the weather system over the sea is unlikely. However, it may enhance northeast monsoon activity along Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The system will be closely monitored for any signs of regeneration.
