Winter Cold To Strengthen Over Northern Plains: Single Digit Temperatures Likely
The recent spell of snow in the mountains and rainfall in the plains, on last Tuesday and Wednesday, has set the tone for wintry conditions. The spell was brief and moderate but still good enough to initiate the change. November, as such, is the transition period from autumn to winter conditions, and the western disturbances are the main trigger. In the wake of these westerly systems, winds from the snow-bound regions blowing down the slopes carry a typical winter chill that instills the change.
Temperatures have dropped significantly over the past 48 hours at many places. Delhi is down to 12.7°C for the second consecutive day, about 2°C below normal. The Lodi Road office recorded the minimum temperature of the season at 11.2°C, the lowest in the Delhi area. Minimum temperatures of ≤10°C were recorded at Amritsar, Bhatinda, Firozpur, Karnal, Hisar, Churu, Ajmer, and Indore. Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh registered a minimum of 9.2°C, the first below 10°C. In the mountains, Srinagar reached the freezing temperature of 0°C for the first time this season.
There is no active weather system likely in the hills. The seasonal anticyclone in the lower levels is strengthening over Rajasthan and its neighbourhood. This will fan cold winds into Madhya Pradesh and North Gujarat in the coming days. The low-level winds are also likely to become stronger. Under the influence of all these conditions, the winter cold is likely to become sturdy over the northern plains in the next one week. The fair amount of sunshine during the day will lead to pleasantly warm conditions. Clear skies at night will facilitate radiational cooling, and minimum temperatures are expected to drop further over the entire region. Single-digit temperatures will increase in spread and scale during the next week. Overall, winter cold is likely to intensify.
