Authorities in Cape Town have announced that Day Zero shouldn't arrive until 2019. Earlier this year, Cape Town, in South Africa, was going to become the first major city of the world to run out of water. Now, the Day Zero deadline of the water crisis has shifted to August 27, whereas earlier it was going to occur either in March or April. But there are chances that situation may never arises. Following weeks of tightening water restrictions, Cape Town may not run out of water this year.

August is that month of the year wherein the region usually experiences heavy rainfall. However, the threat isn’t still over. Day zero may hit in early 2019, if there’s as little rainfall in this year as well as in 2017.

Residents of Cape Town have put in a lot of efforts to conserve water, which have helped to push day zero to next year. According to reports, Cape Town generally uses around 1.2 billion liters of water per day but currently the daily consumption has fallen between 510 and 520 million liters. Even though the city needs a more long-term solution for its water scarcity.

The present water crisis came from the reduced rainfall leading to a three-year long drought. But will it end or continue depends upon the climate-changes.

Many suggestions have been given to help Cape Town to get out of its current water shortage crisis like desalinating ocean water to dragging up a seven-ton iceberg from the Canary Islands and many more. But ultimately the end goal is to save and conserve water, but the expanded time frame could offer many more solutions.

However, the amount of rain that comes over the next several months will be crucial. The authorities will have to take full advantage of the brief reprieve to come up with an action plan to completely get rid of this Day Zero.
