Active Pre-Monsoon Conditions Over Kerala Till Mid-Week Likely
Mar 24, 2025, 3:15 PM | Skymet Weather TeamDown South states remained rain-deficit in the months of Jan and Feb 2025. Except for Tamil Nadu, which fared better, the rest of the states, like Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, had a shortfall of 60% to 90%. As such, the rainfall during this period is minimal, and therefore, deficiency, if any, gets magnified manifold. However, the rains across the region in the month of March have a better show, except in a few pockets, like Telangana, North Interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. While the South Peninsula, as a whole, is surplus by 40% rainfall in March, the subdivisions of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka have a large excess. The state of Kerala has recorded a surplus of 98% rainfall between the 01st and 23rd March. More showers are likely for the state till mid-week.
There was heavy spot rainfall in the last few days at many places, albeit not simultaneously. Hyderabad had the first heavy thunderstorm of the pre-monsoon on 21st Mar, and Bengaluru sent many flights diverted due to prolonged inclement weather conditions on 22nd Mar. Kottayam, Kochi and Thrissur in Kerala have received moderate to heavy pre-monsoon showers over the last three days. More showers are likely for the state of Kerala over the next three days and a breather thereafter.
There is a wind discontinuity/trough extending from Vidarbha to Kerala. This feature will remain for the next 3-4 days before getting shifted to the Konkan region as a cyclonic circulation. Pre-monsoon activity will remain in place for most parts of Kerala between the 24th and 27th of March 2025, and more so, for two days on the 25th and 26th of March. The north-south oriented belt of weather activity will cover Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Cochin, Kottayam, Punalur, and the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, during this period.
