Moderate-Heavy Weekend Showers For Mumbai: Rains Continue Next Week As Well
Mumbai has received inadequate rainfall during the month of September, so far. The last four days have literally gone dry for most parts, with exceptions of light rainfall in very few pockets. The airport observatory Santacruz has recorded 125.3 mm and Colaba a mere 42 mm rainfall in the first 12 days of the month. The monthly normal for September is 341.4 mm. Rains are likely for most parts of the city and suburbs starting this weekend and rolling over till past mid-week next. Light and intermittent rainfall is expected today, throughout, with short breaks in between.

Mumbai gets rainfall under typical synoptic features during the monsoon season. The semi-permanent offshore trough, when active, results in a decent wet spell. Also, any monsoon system developing over the Bay of Bengal strengthens the westerly stream along the West Coast and enhances rainfall activity. The associated cyclonic circulations of such systems, after moving inland and getting positioned over contiguous parts of interior Maharashtra and bordering areas of Madhya Pradesh, become conducive for an extended spell of moderate to heavy rainfall all along the Konkan Coast, more so for Mumbai.
A cyclonic circulation has been persisting over Coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh for the last three days. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the West Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Northwest Bay. This system, after crossing the North Andhra Pradesh Coast, will quickly move inland and track across Telangana, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, and stop short of the Konkan Coast. A broad circulation of the system with an east-west trough will extend from the center of low pressure right up to the Konkan-Goa Coast.
The periphery of the existing system will cause light rain and showers over and around the city today. The intensity and spread of weather will increase when the system moves inland. Moderate intensity rainfall is expected tomorrow, increasing its pace towards late evening and night. Rains are likely to become heavier on 14th & 15th September. The weekend rains may partially disrupt routine services. Traffic snarls and jams, typically of Mumbai rains, are quite likely on Saturday–Sunday–Monday in some areas. The weather activity will ease out a bit on the subsequent days, between 16th and 19th September. A major breakthrough is likely only on the next weekend, 20th & 21st September 2025.
