Chennai Rains: Heavy Rain Likely from Tomorrow
Jun 10, 2025, 1:07 PM | Skymet Weather TeamCoastal Tamil Nadu does not get heavy rains in the monsoon season. Being in the rain shadow area, monsoon showers are mostly intermittent and of brief duration. Also, these showers are patchy and fleeting as well, more so during the first half of the southwest monsoon. Rains start picking up in Aug-Sep but peak during Oct-Nov, in the Northeast Monsoon season.
Chennai has a modest monthly rainfall of 75.4mm in June. Early onset of monsoon this season triggered moderate showers in the last week of May itself. However, the capital city Chennai has had a skewed rain spread in the month of June so far. The airport observatory at Meenambakkam has recorded just 2mm of rainfall between 01st and 10th June, whereas the Nungambakkam observatory has measured 51.6mm of rainfall. This regional observatory recorded 20mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while the airport observatory drew a blank.
Monsoon current has generally remained weak for the last one week. Countrywide rainfall was minimal over most parts. Now, the monsoon surge is likely to become strong and will make progress on either side of the coastline shortly. Capital city Chennai is likely to have a brief but strong spell of monsoon rains over the next two days.
A cyclonic circulation has formed over the West-Central Bay of Bengal (BoB), off South Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. This feature will shift closer to the coast and get centred around South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Coastal Tamil Nadu. A convergence zone will form in close proximity to Chennai and the suburbs. The presence of this zone is likely to trigger heavy rains over and around Chennai, tomorrow and the day after. The peak activity is likely to commence in the evening, tomorrow. The heavy rains are likely around midnight and later. Speedy showers will continue till the morning hours the next day. Weather conditions will start becoming better during the forenoon and afternoon hours. The heavy rainfall belt will shift to Rayalaseema, North Interior Karnataka, and Coastal Karnataka on 12th June, and later move further west to cover Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Goa, and the Konkan region.
