Delhi and suburbs remained dry in the past 24 hours. Before that, the rains visited the city area for five consecutive days between 04th and 08th Aug 2026. In the first week of August, the base station Safdarjung collected 127 mm of rainfall, making it the wettest first week of August in the last 16 years. The heaviest rains of this season were recorded on the morning of 8th August, when the record observatory registered 98.7 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Showers were light and patchy in the subsequent 24 hours. The city has recorded a total of 230.5 mm of rainfall so far this month, surpassing the monthly normal of 226.8 mm. More showers are likely during this week.

The monsoon trough remains the main trigger for rains in Delhi around this time. Courtesy of a low-pressure area over the northern parts of central Madhya Pradesh and the neighbourhood, the trough is running south of its normal position. It is passing through Jaisalmer, Guna, the centre of the low, Daltonganj and further eastward. The trough is oscillating, and therefore, the wind pattern over the Delhi region is variable and rather disturbed. The low-pressure area will move westward and is likely to come over West Madhya Pradesh. The cyclonic circulation will cover parts of West & Northwest Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan. The trough will remain south of Delhi but will maintain proximity.

Also, there is a Western Disturbance over the northern mountains, mainly as an upper system. There are bright chances of interaction between the Western Disturbance and the low-pressure area tomorrow. Delhi will be placed in the middle of the north-south axis of this interaction.

Light rain and showers are likely over and around the Delhi area during this week. Intensity and spread will be more tomorrow. The showers are likely to be heavy and of longer duration as well. Rain and thundershowers are expected tomorrow morning, forenoon, afternoon and evening hours. After a short break, the rains may return again in the wee hours of Wednesday, extending till the morning hours.

Off-and-on light rainfall will continue over Delhi/NCR during the week. It may be a little early to say, but rain may cast its shadow over the main festivities of the 80th Independence Day during the morning hours.
