After days of dry and hot weather, Gujarat is preparing for a spell of pre-monsoon rain and thunderstorms as a depression brew in the Arabian Sea. The weather disturbance, currently forming near the coasts of South Maharashtra and Goa, is expected to move north-westwards along the Indian coastline without directly making landfall in Gujarat.

Though the depression will remain off the coast, its impact will be felt widely across the state. Starting from May 23, southern and central parts of Gujarat are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, with some isolated heavy spells.

Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are also forecast, particularly in districts such as Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Bharuch, Tapi, Narmada, Vadodara, Anand, Botad, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Gir-Somnath, Rajkot, Junagadh, Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar.

We expect rough to very rough sea conditions along the South Gujarat coast for at least a week. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period due to the risk of strong gusty winds and high waves.

While temperatures in most parts of Gujarat have already dipped below 40°C, a further drop is expected, offering much-needed relief from the prevailing heat. However, the expected strong winds may cause minor damage to structures, especially along the coastal areas.

Despite the potential for brief disruptions, these pre-monsoon showers are expected to bring several benefits. The rainfall will improve soil moisture levels and help replenish local water sources — a crucial development for farmers and rural communities as they prepare for the upcoming sowing season.

Authorities are closely monitoring the system and urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
