Karnataka is experiencing one of its wettest pre-monsoon spells in recent years. Between March 1 and May 20, the state has recorded widespread and intense rainfall, well above seasonal averages.

According to meteorological data, coastal Karnataka has received 60% excess rainfall, while south interior Karnataka has seen a 79% surplus. Most strikingly, north interior Karnataka, which typically remains dry even during the monsoon, has registered a massive 151% surplus.

Weather experts attribute this unusual surge in rainfall to persistent weather systems over the Arabian Sea. A cyclonic circulation has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form by May 22. This system is expected to intensify and move in a north-northwest direction along the coast.

Coastal areas are already bearing the brunt of this system. In the past 24 hours alone, Mangalore recorded 86 mm of rain. Forecasts suggest that moderate to heavy rainfall will continue over both coastal Karnataka and north interior Karnataka in the next 24 hours. While there may be a brief dip in intensity thereafter, rainfall is likely to pick up again from the evening of May 24 and persist until May 27.

The resurgence of heavy rain later this week will be driven by strong westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, which will channel abundant moisture inland. Additionally, a trough is expected to develop along the west coast, further enhancing rainfall over the region.

Given the intensity and volume of rain, authorities have warned of possible flash floods and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions.

As Karnataka continues to receive bountiful pre-monsoon showers, it raises hope for a water-rich season but also underscores the need for preparedness against potential weather disruptions.
