There has been a steady rise in temperature in Delhi/NCR for the last three days.

The base observatory at Safdarjung recorded a high of 41.8°C, a degree higher than yesterday and also above normal by the same margin. Rise in the mercury, coupled with an increase in humidity on account of a change in winds, has shot up the heat index.

The feel-like temperature was nearly 50°C yesterday afternoon. The temperature is likely to rise further today and may breach the 42°C mark.

There is a cyclonic circulation over North Punjab and the adjoining Pakistan region in the lower levels. A long east-west trough is marked from the system up to West Bengal, across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand.

The trough is positioned close to Delhi. The winds are going to be light and variable to start with and turn easterly later on. A combination of accumulated heat and increased moisture will lead to the formation of convective clouds later in the day. The occurrence of a dust storm with gusty winds in the evening remains a possibility.

Delhi has not observed a single heat wave day in the month of May so far. The highest maximum temperature of 42.3°C was recorded on 16th May 2025. The mercury is expected to breach 42°C today and in that, may go beyond the highest recorded earlier.  Easterly winds are likely to become stronger tomorrow and stay so for the next about four days. This will lead to sultry weather, muggy conditions, hot days, and warm & humid nights for the rest of the week. However, heat wave conditions are unlikely, as the temperature at best may hover around 42°-43°C, about 2°-3°C above the normal.
