Moderate-Intermittent Rains Through This Week Over Mumbai: Few Spells Of Heavy Showers Likely
Mumbai and suburbs continue to witness heavy showers for the second consecutive day. Earlier, Santacruz recorded 87 mm rainfall yesterday morning and added another 73 mm today morning. The other observatory at Colaba registered a heavier downpour with 134 mm rainfall till 8:30 a.m. today. Rains are continuing, nearly non-stop across various parts of the city. More showers are likely through the day.
The low-pressure area marked over Telangana and Vidarbha region has weakened. However, the cyclonic circulation continues to be marked over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and contiguous border areas of Madhya Pradesh. This system is unlikely to move ahead further and may keep meandering over the same region for the next 2–3 days. The periphery of the system is carrying the weather activity right up to Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan region, including Mumbai. This weather feature will be trailed by yet another system originating over the Bay of Bengal.
Mumbai weather activity was anticipated well and is very much on predicted lines. Fairly widespread rain and thundershowers are likely to continue, with possibly short breaks in between. Moderate-intensity rain and showers are likely to continue through this week, with small undulations of intensity and spread. Suburbs of Mumbai, both in the north and south of central parts, will be equally affected.
The month of September has gathered 292.3 mm rainfall so far, against the normal of 341.4 mm. Santacruz and Colaba have added another 18 mm and 24 mm rainfall respectively between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. On the other side of the Western Ghats, Pune has rained very heavily during this period. The city of Mumbai is likely to surpass its monthly total today itself. The month will go with a large surplus, just like the previous month of August which accumulated more than double the normal rainfall. The monsoon withdrawal is unlikely from Mumbai during the month of September or may at least stretch till the fag end of this month.
