The state of Uttarakhand is likely to have heavy rainfall for the next two days. The rains may slow down on Wednesday but will soon get revived and continue thereafter during the week. The foothills and lower hills of the state, more so of the Kumaon Division, will be at risk of inclement weather conditions.

The locations bearing the threat of heavy rains will include Pantnagar, Rudrapur and Udham Singh Nagar, extending up to Dehradun. The low and medium hills at risk will include Nainital, Rampur, Almora, Ranikhet, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Bageshwar and Mukteshwar. Garhwal Division will also have scattered moderate rain and thundershowers.

There is a Western Disturbance moving across as an upper-air system. The monsoon trough is oscillating north-south. A low-pressure area, mainly seen as a circulation, is marked over western parts of Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

There is likely to be interaction between the Western Disturbance and the low-pressure area, moving the monsoon trough closer to the foothills. Under the combined influence of these systems, monsoon activity will pick up over the state of Uttarakhand.

The meteorological conditions are shaping up in a way wherein the monsoon trough is likely to shift along the foothills of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It will extend further across the foothills of Nepal and Bihar during this week.

Under such a situation, rainfall activity increases all along the trough. However, small pockets along the stretch of the trough get embedded with deep convective thunderstorm cells. These are the ones that trigger extreme weather activity without much notice.

The foothills and lower hills of Uttarakhand become vulnerable to intense weather activity under such conditions. The area will become prone to landslides due to heavy rains.

There are no indications of the monsoon trough returning to its normal position. Therefore, the weather activity may extend into the next week as well.
