Heavy Rains Batter Kolkata, Cause Widespread Waterlogging and Disruption
Kolkata has been lashed by relentless rainfall over the past 24 hours, as a depression that formed over North Bengal and adjoining coastal West Bengal brought severe weather conditions across the region. The impact of the system has been particularly pronounced in Gangetic West Bengal, with the state capital facing widespread waterlogging and traffic paralysis.
According to meteorological data, Dum Dum Airport recorded 65 mm of rain, while Alipore witnessed a higher total of 81 mm during the same period. The incessant downpour has inundated many low-lying areas of the city, causing major disruption to daily life. Reports of knee-deep water on key roads and vehicular gridlocks have emerged from several neighbourhoods, severely hampering movement during peak hours.
Daily Forecast: Weather update and forecast for July 26 across India
The situation has been no better in districts surrounding Kolkata. East Burdwan, Purulia, Hooghly, and Bankura have all experienced intense rainfall since Thursday afternoon. The regional meteorological office has also issued warnings about the possibility of lightning strikes in several parts of southern West Bengal, urging residents to exercise caution.
The depression is expected to continue its west-northwestward movement toward Jharkhand, northern Chhattisgarh, and northeastern Madhya Pradesh. As a result, rainfall over Kolkata is likely to taper off by tomorrow, July 26. Light to moderate showers are forecast, offering a much-needed reprieve for the rain-weary city.
