Hot Days Ahead for Delhi: May Record Highest Temperature of the Year Today
Jun 9, 2025, 12:45 PM | Skymet Weather TeamDelhi recorded the highest temperature of this month yesterday. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 42.1°C, about 2°C above normal. The record observatory has added more than 5°C over the last 3 days. Palam and Lodhi Road office recorded 43.6°C and 42.3°C yesterday.
As the temperatures are about 2°–3°C above normal, it does not amount to heat wave conditions. Heat wave conditions are announced when the maximum temperature in the plains reaches or exceeds 40°C and has a departure from the normal by 4.5°C to 6.4°C. A heat wave is also declared when the temperature breaches 45°C.

Some of the auxiliary observatories of the Delhi region crossed 44°C yesterday. Mungeshpur, with 44.6°C, was the highest followed by Ayanagar at 44.1°C. These temperatures are likely to increase further today and may amount to heat wave conditions in some pockets. However, the base station at Safdarjung may still fall short of the heat wave criteria. Yet, the observatory may record the highest temperature of this year. So far, Delhi registered a high of 42.3°C on 16 May 2025 and is likely to go closer to 43°C today. Some other parts of Delhi will continue with mercury levels of 44°C or more, amounting to heat wave conditions.
There is no active western disturbance across the northern mountains. The east-west trough has also shifted far to the north. The cyclonic circulation over Punjab and adjoining areas is quite weak. No pre-monsoon weather activity is likely today. Additionally, the temperatures have crossed 49°C across the border.
Jacobabad (Pakistan) has registered a high of 49.4°C. The northwesterly winds will transport this heat from across the border to the plains of North India, including Delhi. A bright day with sharp sun will further add to the soaring conditions.
A moderate breeze with oppressive temperatures will trigger ‘loo’ conditions for Delhi/NCR for the next 3–4 days. Heat wave conditions are likely in some pockets. The base station Safdarjung, Lodhi Road office, and airport observatory Palam may still escape typical heat wave conditions.
