Light Rain-Dust Storm Likely Today For Delhi : More Showers Next Week
May 30, 2025, 12:14 PM | Skymet Weather TeamDelhi registered a mild dust storm yesterday evening. Most parts of the capital observed strong winds of about 45-50 km/h kicking up dust, followed by a light sprinkle in some areas. The temperature dropped by 4-5°C, resulting in pleasant weather conditions in the late evening and night. Base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1°C, the highest in the last week but still below normal by about a degree. A trace of rainfall was recorded at Safdarjung, Palam, and the Lodhi Road office. Some of the observatories recorded 2-4 mm of rainfall in the evening hours.
A cyclonic circulation is marked over Punjab and adjoining border areas. Factually, once the monsoon settles down, a semi-permanent low-pressure area will form here, covering parts of West Rajasthan and the neighboring regions of Punjab and Haryana. This system is also popularly termed a ‘heat low.’ Invariably, the cyclonic circulation will also be seen over this region in the lower levels of the atmosphere. The monsoon trough will then run from this system to Gangetic West Bengal.
Another cyclonic circulation is marked over the central parts of Uttar Pradesh. The trough joining these two circulations runs through Delhi and extends up to the pre-existing depression over Bangladesh. There is a western disturbance as an upper air system moving across the Jammu & Kashmir region. Yet another western disturbance waits in the wings, somewhere over North Afghanistan and its neighborhood. Under the combined influence of these features, pre-monsoon weather activity is likely over Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi is likely to observe cloudy skies during the day, suppressing the rise of temperature. There is a likelihood of thunderstorm and dust storm activity in the evening hours, followed by light rains. Weather activity will be brief and mild too. A seasonal thunderstorm or dust accompanying strong winds may go missing on Saturday, the last day of the month. Conditions will become favorable, once again, between 01st and 05th June for sporadic pre-monsoon activity. The spread and intensity will be more between 02nd and 04th June. The heat wave will continue to remain in abeyance for at least one week and extendable beyond.
