Southwest Monsoon continues to play hide and seek with the national capital. Despite most of the parameters like humidity, winds, clouds, and temperature aligning with monsoon-like conditions, the rains failed to turn up till last night. The sky, at times, became heavily overcast yesterday, but the visible manifestation of the monsoon showers kept dodging the NCR. It seems the monsoon is likely to miss the official date of 27th June and may show up, at the earliest, on the weekend.

There is a cyclonic circulation over Southeast Rajasthan and neighbouring parts of Madhya Pradesh. An east-west trough from this feature is extending eastward, across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and connecting with the cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of North Odisha and West Bengal. This trough is far to the south of the Delhi region and, therefore, may not allow the monsoon showers to ingress into Delhi today. Under the influence of a western disturbance, the trough has a tendency to shift northward slowly. Proximity of the trough tomorrow may cause light, scattered, and fleeting rain sometime in the evening. But it may not suffice to announce the arrival of the monsoon. The weekend seems to be a safe bet, when the typical monsoon showers will be seen, both on Saturday and Sunday.

If so, the monsoon may skip the scheduled date with the national capital marginally. There are enough indications for the east-west trough to oscillate and finally shift north of Delhi on 28th June. The movement of the trough across any region invariably triggers rain and thundershowers. Delhi is likely to see decent showers late on Saturday evening. Thereafter, the pleasing intermittent showers will become a regular feature for the next five days, till 2nd July 2025.
