Pre-Monsoon Weather Activity To End Soon Over Gujarat, Heat Wave Likely Next Week
May 12, 2025, 1:25 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe state of Gujarat witnessed unseasonal weather activity during the last week. It was a very unusual feature, as the state does not fall in the activity zone of pre-monsoon. The remnant effect still goes on, and there have been isolated rain and thundershowers over Saurashtra and Kutch. Bhuj and Porbandar recorded 4mm and 1 mm of rainfall, respectively. Even the state capital Gandhinagar (Gandhinagar weather) and the collocated town Ahmedabad observed thunderstorms during late evening and early night hours, but no rainfall.
The day temperatures remained well below the normal. Except for Bhuj, which breached the 40°C mark, most interior parts like Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Baroda, Surendranagar, Deesa, and VV Nagar could barely reach 37°-38°C. A steady rise in the temperature is likely, more so after mid-week.
Cyclonic circulation is marked over the Northeast Arabian Sea in the lower levels. This feature has weakened over the last weekend, but still, southwesterly winds are invading the coastline of Saurashtra and South Gujarat.
Conditions remain favorable for isolated weather activity to continue for the next 48 hours and more so during the upcoming 24 hours. Thereafter, the circulation will fizzle out over the sea itself and lead to clear weather conditions over the entire state.
Westerly winds are likely to sweep the state from 15th May onwards. The heat from across the border will reach the hinterland of the state, more prominently from the start of next week. The day temperatures will reach and exceed 40°C in the interiors of Saurashtra and north & central Gujarat anytime from now onwards.
The combined effect of these increased temperatures, along with transported heat from across the border, will trigger heat wave conditions over a few parts of the state.
There is no extreme heat likely over the state, even during the next week, and heat stress will remain confined to small pockets. State capital Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (Ahmedabad weather) may slip into the low 40s from 15th May onwards and rise further next week.
