Delhi has not recorded a temperature of 40°C in this month so far. It is rather unusual that Delhi skips the threshold of 40°C for nearly two weeks in May. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a high of 37.8°C, a rise of about 2°C from the previous day, but still below normal by nearly 2°C. The main reason for the submissive temperatures over the last 3 days was patchy, fleeting showers over most parts of the capital city. Thundershowers over central and south Delhi were rather heavy on Saturday, 10th May 2025. A rise in temperature is expected during this week, but it will still remain short of heat wave conditions.

The persistent east-west trough in the close vicinity of Delhi has shifted northward. Cyclonic circulation is now marked along the foothills of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand in the lower levels.

The trough, though, shifted north of Delhi but still remains within reach of causing isolated thunderstorm-dust storm activity, followed by light showers. Typical pre-monsoon conditions with heat during the day, followed by some relief showers accompanied by strong winds, will remain the highlights for the next few days for Delhi/NCR.

The mercury will rise to go beyond 40°C around mid-week. However, the surface winds will remain strong to mitigate the heat stress. Yet, looks like conditions are expected between 14th and 17th May 2025. Scattered clouds may not provide any significant relief. The patchy rainfall and dusty winds may better the weather conditions during the night hours.

The normal temperature for Delhi around this time is 40°C. A heat wave is announced when the day temperature reaches at least 40°C and remains above normal by 4.5°C or more. For this, Delhi has to cross the threshold of 44°C, which is unlikely. Therefore, heat wave conditions are not expected during this week. Surely, the heat is likely to build up and get accumulated over the next few days. Conditions are becoming more favourable for the first spell of the heat wave in May during the second fortnight of the month.
