Southwest Monsoon arrived in Delhi on Thursday, 02nd July 2026, a little behind schedule. The city has been receiving rain and thundershowers for the last three days. However, the weather activity has been in brief spells and sporadic in nature. The typical and prolonged wet spell has given a miss so far. Notwithstanding, the thundery buildups and sharp showers accompanied by strong winds resulted in 15 flight diversions yesterday, both domestic and international. The inclement weather sitting right over the airfield and local flying area denied safe approach to the aeroplanes and hence routed them to Jaipur and Lucknow, the diversionary aerodromes for Palam.
Base station Safdarjung and airport Palam recorded 6.4 mm and 16.4 mm rainfall respectively in the past 24 hours. Most parts of Delhi/NCR received light to moderate rainfall and Chhatarpur in the Delhi region was the highest with 48.5 mm rainfall. More showers are likely till 10th July 2026. Persistent clouds, moderate winds and sporadic showers will lower the day temperatures to hover around 35°C
The main trigger for monsoon rains is the seasonal east-west trough from Rajasthan to Gangetic West Bengal. This trough is currently controlled by the depression over the Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh region. The trough is running well south of Delhi. However, there is a western disturbance across the mountains, pulling this trough northward. Under the combined influence, the trough will oscillate north-south, leading to scattered rainfall over the capital and suburbs for the next five days.
The rainfall is likely to be light today with fleeting showers in some pockets of the city. The spread and intensity may increase tomorrow and the pattern will continue till Thursday, 09th July. The remnant effect will also prevail on 10th July 2026. As the trough line shifts far to the north, the approaching weekend may witness dry weather conditions. Accordingly, the temperature will exceed 35°C and may breach 37°C at the start of next week.
