Delhi/NCR witnessed typical retreating monsoon weather activity yesterday. Faridabad received its first rain in the morning, while Noida experienced the first spell in the early afternoon hours. In the late afternoon and early evening, there was yet another spell of rain and showers over Noida and some parts of South Delhi. The base station Safdarjung received intense heavy showers between 4 and 5 p.m., recording 45 mm of rainfall. The Lodhi Road office also observed moderate showers, measuring 25.6 mm of rainfall. Strangely, the airport observatory at Palam did not record any rainfall throughout the day. Most other parts of Delhi remained dry, with only a few experiencing light and patchy rainfall. This pattern was typical of the receding monsoon and indicative of a likely withdrawal within the next few days.

The reason for this downpour over Safdarjung is attributable to an east–west trough running in close proximity, slightly north of the capital city. A cyclonic circulation is marked over the central parts of Uttar Pradesh and another one over Northeast Bihar. The axis joining these two features extends on either side, triggering distinctive exiting monsoon showers. Both these circulations persist, albeit with a slight eastward shift over their respective regions. The trough maintains its vicinity to the capital city and therefore remains favourable for another round of showers sometime in the late afternoon and evening.

The remnant effect of this feature may even cause very light activity a day later. However, this will be a ‘touch and go’ chance tomorrow. Weather conditions will improve thereafter, and the weekend is expected to be dry and hot. A clear sky and drier winds will push mercury levels higher. The day temperature may exceed 36°C on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend may even register the highest maximum temperature of the month so far.
