Monsoon To Reach Delhi In The Last Leg Of Onset On Sunday
Jun 27, 2025, 12:37 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe Southwest Monsoon will overstep its normal date of entry over Delhi. Today, 27th June, happens to be the scheduled arrival of the monsoon for the national capital, but the onset is likely to be delayed by about two days. Also, it may not be a resounding start, as is normally expected. Sharp showers are likely, but their duration may be brief. After the formal onset of the monsoon, weather conditions are expected to remain pleasant and comfortable for the subsequent 4–5 days before turning warm and humid again.
The east-west trough continues to remain far to the south of Delhi. This trough is connecting the circulation over Southwest Rajasthan with another one over North Odisha and West Bengal. For the arrival of the monsoon, this feature needs to get closer and remain in proximity for the visible manifestation of inaugural monsoon showers. A western disturbance, in the form of a cyclonic circulation over North Punjab and the Pakistan region, will help pull the western end of the trough northward.
During this process, the oscillation of the trough will trigger rain and thundershowers late on Saturday evening, continuing till Sunday morning. The formal announcement of the monsoon's arrival may be made on Sunday, 29th June 2025.
In the absence of rain and clouds, and due to a temporary change in winds, the day temperature shot up to 38°C yesterday—the highest since 15th June 2025. The temperature is unlikely to rise further and may instead drop marginally. The mercury is expected to stay around 37°C today, 36°C tomorrow, and drop below 35°C following the monsoon showers on Sunday, continuing into mid-week next.
The Southwest Monsoon has covered most parts of the country, making an early arrival over large areas. The remaining parts include the national capital and its suburbs, along with a minuscule portion of West Uttar Pradesh, South Haryana, and a narrow band of Rajasthan across Churu, Mahajan, Khajuwala, and Beriyawali. All these areas are likely to be covered together, expectedly on Sunday, 29th June 2025. It is very rare that the national capital, Delhi, gets the monsoon cover in the last leg of the onset journey.
