Mumbai and its suburbs received scattered rain and thundershowers during the past 24 hours. Airport observatory Santacruz recorded 12 mm rainfall, while regional observatory Colaba received 49 mm rain. Earlier, both these stations had recorded moderate showers amounting to 19 mm and 13 mm respectively on the previous day. This rainfall was accompanied by thundershowers, typical of pre-monsoon activity and a precursor to the arrival of the southwest monsoon. More showers are likely during this week.
The southwest monsoon has made a delayed entry into Mumbai this year. Against the normal onset date of June 11, the arrival has been delayed by about 12 days. Last year, the monsoon had arrived on May 26, the earliest onset ever recorded. A similar early arrival was observed in 1956 as well. A year before that, the monsoon reached the city on June 9, 2024.
However, the monsoon onset was most delayed in 2023, when it arrived on June 25, the latest onset recorded so far. This date was also observed earlier in 2019 and 2023.
The month of June normally receives 526.3 mm rainfall in Mumbai. So far this month, Santacruz and Colaba have recorded 46.1 mm and 76.1 mm rainfall respectively. With nearly a week remaining in the month, moderate showers are expected on most days. The wet spell will also include short-duration heavy rainfall activity over several parts of the city.
There could be a risk of waterlogging in some low-lying areas. Commuters may face difficulties due to water accumulation in certain pockets. Most of the intense weather activity is expected during the late evening and night hours, while intermittent breaks are likely during the daytime. Cloudy skies and moderate winds are expected to provide relief from the warm and humid weather conditions.
