The state of Uttarakhand will come in for yet another spell of severe weather activity today and tomorrow. Intense activity will turn moderate on the subsequent days around mid-week. Further, it will substantially ease out and remain confined to isolated pockets by the weekend.

Multiple factors joining together will potentially lead to hazardous weather conditions over most parts of the state. There is a cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh. The monsoon trough is passing through this feature and maintaining proximity to the foothills of Uttarakhand and west Uttar Pradesh. Another reactant in the vicinity is a western disturbance as an upper-air system across the mountainous region. Interaction between the western disturbance and monsoon features in the plains is triggering rough weather activity all along the foothills and extending up to mid-height hills.

Both sub-divisions of the state of Uttarakhand will be vulnerable to treacherous weather conditions. This time, the Garhwal region will possibly take a severe hit, and the Kumaon belt could fare slightly better—but not safe enough to let the guard down. Places at risk include Bageshwar, Chamoli, Almora, and Pithoragarh in the Kumaon Division. Danger will also loom large over Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal, and the Kedarnath-Badrinath axis in the Garhwal Division. The foothills and lower hills—such as Udham Singh Nagar, Rudrapur, Pantnagar, Kashipur, stretching up to Nainital and Mukteshwar—need to be on high alert for the next two days. There is a likelihood of torrential downpours, cloudbursts, landslides, and localized flooding disrupting communication, connectivity, and road networks.

Water bodies often respond even after weather conditions improve. The complexity of the terrain adds to the scale of inclement weather. Utmost caution needs to be exercised through this week. Visible recovery can be expected around the approaching weekend.
