Avalanche hits Ladakh Region, Four Soldiers Dead

April 4, 2015 6:30 PM | Skymet Weather Team

An avalanche has struck an Army convoy in the Ladakh region killing four army personnel and leaving two injured. Also, one soldier has gone missing after the tragic event. Rescue operatives have recovered the bodies of two soldiers so far, while two soldiers were rescued in critical condition.

Events like avalanches, landslides, and the alarming rise in water levels continue to occur even after rainfall has stopped in the region. Although the intensity of rain has been varying throughout Jammu & Kashmir, a feeble Western Disturbance keeps giving light snowfall in the higher reaches. In such inclement weather, an event like an avalanche is likely to occur at any point.

Since one week, light snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir led to the formation of layers of snow. The soft layers of snowfall piled up on one another, and when the snow pack lost balance, it led to the occurrence of an avalanche in the region.

The situation is definitely expected to improve, but people residing in areas prone to avalanches or landslides, are advised to exercise caution.
