The city of Mumbai has received good Monsoon rains throughout the season, which makes the city 62.4% excess, this season. The Southwest Monsoon has performed excellently until now, with the city easily surpassing its June, July, and September averages, while August remained at par.

Until September 30, the dream city has recorded 3672.6 mm of rainfall against the normal of 2260.4 mm (the data accounts from June 1 to September 30).

Between June 1 and September 30, there have been nearly 10 occasions when the city has recorded three-digit rainfall. Of which 4 times, it has witnessed more than 200 mm of rainfall, wherein on July 2 extremely heavy Mumbai rains to the tune of 375.2 mm were recorded.

According to the meteorologists at Skymet, these may be the highest number of heavy rainfall episodes recorded during a single Monsoon season until now over the Mumbai city.

The Weathermen have blamed Global Warming and Climate Change as extreme weather events for such large amounts of rainfall.

‘Not only Mumbai but the entire world is bearing the brunt of these extremities’, said one of the meteorologists.

Mumbai does see a few heavy rain episodes during the entire Monsoon period. However, this season, the city has seen extremely heavy rainfall events more frequently. The first of this episode was witnessed on June 29 which continued up to July 2.

The second heavy rainfall episode was observed on July 9 and the third one on July 27. The fourth event was seen in the month of August between 3 and 5.

Between September 3 and 5, the city saw its fifth heavy rainfall event, while the sixth episode was recorded on September 8.

With this, we can conclude that this Monsoon season has been unusual as the city has got to see heavy amounts of rain during all the four months. Not to forget about the havoc that Mumbai rains have wreaked!
