Cyclone Tauktae bring rains for Mumbai, showers likely next 3 days

Cyclonic Storm Tauktae is presently centered around 300kmWest-Southwest of Goa in the East Central Arabian Sea. It is likely to become a Severe cyclonic Storm anytime soon and later to a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

The peripherals of the storm are extending up to the Konkan region including Mumbai. Though the cyclone will move North-Northwest for the next 24 hours and thereby increase its distance from the coastline. The storm will be about 400km away from the coast when it reaches abeam Mumbai. Mumbai still remains within the outer cloud bands of this massive cyclone. The outflow from the system will results in showers for Mumbai and suburbs over the next 3 days. These also will be accompanied with squally conditions and gusty winds may speed up to 30-40kmph. Very heavy rains are not expected over Mumbai.

Some areas in the past 24 hours received some showers including Colaba. Cloudy sky and intermittent passing showers will provide relief from the sweltering heat of recent days. Mumbai has a normal of 11.3mm of rainfall in May. Most of it comes with pre-monsoon thunderstorms mainly towards 2nd half of the month. Mumbai has not rained otherwise for the last more than a month. It is going to be a welcome change and twist in the weather conditions.
