The national capital is likely to have another round of heat waves during this week. Earlier, a three-day spell of heat wave was observed between 07th and April 2025. The highest temperature of 41°C was recorded during that spell, which also was the highest so far this year.  There has been an incremental rise in the mercury level over the last three days. Base station Safdarjung recorded a daily maximum of 36.6°C yesterday, a rise of 1.4°C from the previous day.  The day high may reach around 38°C today and a marginal rise further to 39°C tomorrow. The average temperature for the city is about 36°C around this time of the month. For a heat wave, the maximum temperature needs to reach or exceed 41°C.

There is no weather system over the mountains for the next two days. A fair amount of sunshine and dry weather will accumulate heat during this period, and the temperatures will rise over the region. A fresh weather system is likely to arrive on 16th April over the northern hills. A support circulation will come up over North Punjab and Rajasthan the next day. The weather activity is expected to impact the mountains for fairly long, from 16th to 21st April, more fierce between 18th and 20th April.

The approach of the system, as it usually happens, will precede warm air over the plains. The temperature over Delhi will rise between 16th and 20th April, to stay above 40°C. Borderline heat wave conditions are likely on 16th and 19th April, with day temperatures hovering around 40°-41°C. Yes, on 17th and 18th Apr, mercury is expected to breach the the 42°C mark, amounting to moderate heat wave conditions.  There could be some cloud patches appearing intermittently due to the proximity of cyclonic circulation, but no rainfall is likely.  Weather activity over the hills and strengthening of low-level winds in the wake of the system will sink the temperatures by 3°-4°C around the weekend.
