Key Takeaways

  • November 2025 was Delhi’s coldest in five years, with an average minimum of 11.4°C.
  • The month saw 10 days of single-digit minimum temperatures, dipping as low as 8°C.
  • No cold wave was recorded in November, though December has begun under cold wave conditions at Safdarjung.
  • An approaching western disturbance will limit further temperature decline, but single-digit nights will continue this week.

Delhi recorded its coldest month of November in the last five years. The average minimum temperature for the month stood at 11.4°C, against the monthly normal of 13°C. Single-digit minimum temperatures below 10°C were recorded on 10 days, and the lowest minimum temperature was 8.0°C on 26 November 2025. The month had started with the highest minimum of 19.4°C on 1 November and closed with a low of 8.3°C yesterday.

The average minimum temperature for Delhi over the last four years was 14.7°C (2024), 13°C (2023), 12.3°C (2022), and 11.9°C (2021). In November 2020, the average minimum temperature for the month was recorded at 10.3°C, with the lowest minimum dipping to 6.3°C on 23 November 2020. November 2025 also remained absolutely dry and joined the list of rainless Novembers along with 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, and 2024.

November 2025 did not record any cold wave conditions. For a cold wave to be declared, the minimum temperature must drop below 10°C with a departure of 4.5°C or more from normal for two consecutive days. Cold wave conditions are also declared when minimum temperatures in the plains fall to 4°C or lower.

The month of December has started on a cold wave note. Base station Safdarjung recorded a minimum of 5.7°C, about 4.6°C below normal. This is the lowest temperature for Delhi so far this season. Technically, this meets the criterion for cold wave conditions. However, the drop in temperature is unlikely to sustain as a western disturbance is moving across the northern mountains. Persistent clouding over those parts will arrest any further drop in the plains, including Delhi. Minimum temperatures are expected to stay in the single digits through this week.

No. Despite low temperatures, the required departure from normal and consistency criteria were not met.

The cold wave may not sustain due to an incoming western disturbance, but single-digit minimum temperatures will persist.
