Pune, the second largest city of Maharashtra, has been observing hot conditions for the last many days. As such, the state of Maharashtra has been reeling under soaring temperatures and in that, the sub-division of Vidarbha has virtually turned into a furnace, with most stations clocking maximum temperatures in the range of 44°–45°C. The sprawling city of Pune generally observes good and pleasant weather conditions, except from mid-March to the end of May. Monsoon brings cheers to the comfort levels and weather conditions remain pleasing even thereafter, till February.

The city has a few observatories in different pockets. The most sought-after observatory at the Lohegaon airport more often records the highest temperature among the city locations and suburbs. The airport recorded the highest temperature of the season at 43.2°C. The minimum temperature of 26.6°C today morning was also the highest of this season. The maximum and minimum temperatures were above the normal by 5°C and 5.9°C, respectively, qualifying for a double whammy of heat wave and warm night for the city.

Heat wave conditions are announced when the maximum temperature in the plains touches 40°C or more and the departure from the normal is 4.5°C or more. Similarly, a warm night is declared when the maximum temperature is 40°C or more and the minimum temperature departure from normal is 4.5°C or more. A double attack of a heat wave and a warm night is rather unusual for the tech city of Pune.

Hot conditions are likely to persist for the city for a few more days. The recurving winds along the Konkan Coast and the adjacent Western Ghats, as an offshoot of an anticyclone, partly over land and the rest over the sea, are responsible for this dual attack. The sinking process of the air mass in association with the anticyclone leads to warming of the air column. As such, the land winds sweeping the city, blowing from hot areas of Madhya Pradesh, carry intrinsic heat. This gets aggravated by the subsidence associated with the anticyclone. Pune and its suburbs are likely to remain hot, with mercury levels in excess of 40°C during this week.
