Drier and Warmer Days Ahead For Bengaluru
Feb 21, 2025, 3:30 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe capital city, Bengaluru, has observed absolutely dry weather conditions for the last about one month. The last rains in the city, light showers, were recorded on 19th & 20th Jan 2025 and dry thereafter. As such, January and February are the least rainy months for the tech city. The day temperatures rise steadily from Jan to Feb and further to March. April and the first half of May are the hottest periods, with a monthly average of about 34°C in April.
The city recorded a high of 33.2°C yesterday, about 1.4°C more than normal and a shade lower than the earlier reading of 34.4°C on 19th Feb 2025. The city has the distinction of reaching or crossing 35°C in Feb itself. It recorded such temperatures in the mid-30s in 2009, 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Last year, the highest in the month of Feb was 34.5°C, recorded on 24th Feb. The highest ever temperature of 35.9°C for the month was recorded on 17th Feb 2005.
The city is likely to observe warm and drier weather ahead during the remaining days of the month. There is no active weather system likely over the South Peninsula and the equatorial and oceanic region on either side of the coastline. High humidity in the morning hours tapers down fast, and the drier easterly winds sweep across the plateau, surrounding the city. Being an elevated town with a moderate height of 3,000 feet, the air in the friction layer is rarefied. Reduced density of the air parcel makes it susceptible to quick warming and a sharp rise in temperature. Under bright and sunny conditions, even mercury levels of the low 30s generate a pricking sensation. Such conditions are expected to persist for the next one week. Actually, the day temperature is likely to rise further in March. There is a sharp increase in the average mercury level from 30.9°C in February to 33.4°C in March. Bangaloreans can expect more warmer days ahead, giving a feel of early summer.
