Gujarat Heats Up! Inland Areas To Touch 37°C This Week, Image: Canva

The state of Gujarat is likely to have rising mercury levels during this week. A significant rise in the temperature is expected from mid-week onwards and will stay put for the week. Hot weather conditions will spill over to the next week as well. Interiors of Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch will soar high, and the coastal stations may remain subdued. The discomfort on account of high humidity may still remain relevant along the coastline of Saurashtra and South Gujarat.

As such, the day temperatures have been recorded on the higher side for most inland stations of Gujarat. State capitals Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Deesa, Surendranagar and Rajkot have registered mercury levels above the average by 3°-4°C. The margin may rise further, more so for north and central Gujarat.

The fluctuating temperature conditions over the state are on account of the change in wind patterns. The anticyclonic winds from the Rajasthan region will continue to reach most parts of the state for the next two days. Thereafter, the combined influence of the approach of the western disturbance over the northern parts and the appearance of the anticyclone over the North and East Arabian Sea, off Saurashtra and the South Gujarat Coast, will trigger a rise in temperatures over the state.

The winds in the lower levels will turn westerly or southwesterly, originating from Sind-Pakistan and the North Arabian Sea. While the coastal stations of Saurashtra and South Gujarat, like Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Okha, Veraval, Somnath, Bhavnagar and Surat, may witness temperatures around 30°-32°C, the deep inland stations will observe a significant rise. There is a likelihood of a progressive rise of mercury from Thursday onwards. Stations at risk will include Bhuj, Naliya, Kandla, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Junagarh, Amreli, Deesa, Patan, Mehsana, Palanpur, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Anand, Godhra and border areas with Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Mercury levels may touch 36°-37°C over the far-flung areas. The hot spell will last from this mid-week till mid-week next for about 6-8 days. Night temperatures will still remain better and within the comfort range.
