Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi witnessed a strong dust storm with winds up to 60 km/h and sharp temperature drop.
  • Similar dust storm and thunderstorm activity is likely for the next 4-5 days.
  • Day temperatures may stay near 40°C, but severe heat wave conditions are likely to ease.
  • Evening and night hours remain the most favourable window for storm activity.

After recording a hat-trick of 42°C days, Delhi was hit by a dust storm last evening. The storm was accompanied by strong winds with speeds of 60 km/h, kicking up dust and reducing visibility. The temperature plunged by about 6°C, from 40°C to 34°C, during the late evening weather activity. However, the minimum temperatures have risen this morning by about 3°C to 4°C. More weather activity is expected, with a similar pattern, during this week.

A western disturbance is moving across the northern mountains. Light rains have occurred over Jammu & Kashmir and the foothills of Punjab and Haryana. An induced circulation is marked over South Punjab, North Rajasthan and border areas of Pakistan. An east-west trough is extending from the circulation to Uttar Pradesh, staying in proximity to the national capital. This trough will oscillate north-south. Under the combined influence of these features, along with the additional trigger of accumulated heat, Delhi/NCR will observe stormy conditions during this week.

Dust storm and thunderstorm activity, of varying intensity, is likely to remain a regular feature for the next 4-5 days. The weather activity will occur during the late afternoon, evening and early night hours. The stormy activity will be preceded by dust-raising winds and followed by scattered rain/showers. Peals of thunder and flashes of lightning will accompany the mature phase of thunderstorm clouds.

The day temperatures will not see any sharp rise during this period. These will mostly hover around 40°C, +/-1°C, till the weekend. Although hot conditions will remain in place, the extreme heat will stay away, easing heat wave conditions. Earlier, the city observed heat wave conditions between Thursday and Saturday. The base observatory Safdarjung recorded the highest temperature of 42.8°C on 25 April 2026, and it is unlikely to be breached again during the fag end of the month.
