Mumbai has witnessed the second round of ‘heat & humidity’ on the weekend. The day temperature soared to 36.3°C on Saturday last, and a shade relief with 35°C yesterday. These temperatures are about 2°-4°C above the normal. In view of the early onset of the sea breeze, the temperature is likely to dip today and may get restricted to 33°C. Earlier, the financial capital had recorded 39.2°C, the highest temperature of this month, on 11th March 2025. Actually, the city had observed heat wave conditions a little early in the season, between 10th and 12th March 2025.

The month of March is the driest month for the coastal city of Mumbai. The mean monthly rainfall for March and April is nearly zero, more so for March. Yes, the temperature does exceed 40°C, as it happened in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021. No 40°C has been recorded for the last four consecutive years, between 2022 and 2025. There were some freak occurrences of rainfall also in March. In 2015 and 2016, the city recorded 13mm and 10 mm of rainfall, respectively.

The conditions are becoming favorable to break the jinx of ‘dry’ weather in Mumbai. There is a chance of having rainfall, albeit light and brief, between 01st and 04th April 2025. A cyclonic circulation is marked over North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada in the lower levels, with a trough extending up to the South Konkan and Goa region. This feature will shift westward, further closer to the coast, and have a light zone of convergence in the vicinity tomorrow. The circulation and the trough will get aligned along the coastline of Konkan and Goa on 02nd April. Light rainfall is likely on 01st April over Vidarbha, Marathwada and South Madhya Maharashtra. The spread and intensity will pick up over the next two days. The showers will be more concentrated over South Madhya Maharashtra, between 02nd and 04th April and will spill over to the Konkan region as well. Since the circulation is shifting from east to west over the interiors of Maharashtra, the Western Ghats invariably become a barrier for this spillover. Still, there seems to be an outside chance for the coastal city of Mumbai to witness showers between 01st and 04th April 2025. If so, these will purely be unseasonal showers. Yet, these may provide some relief from the muggy conditions for the city and suburbs.
